Wang Fangzi, formerly known as Wang Songyao and Wang Jianxing, was born in Jinze Town, Qingpu in 1916. When he was young, his family was poor, and he followed his father everywhere, working as an apprentice in a rice shop in Suzhou.

Influenced by the new culture and new thoughts at that time, when he was studying in Suzhou in 1936, Wang Fangzi actively participated in the reading club and other activities led by the underground party at that time. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, he actively participated in the anti-Japanese national salvation movement. He joined the Communist Party of China in Changsha in August 1938.

In 1939, Wang Fangzi worked at the Life Bookstore in Hengyang, Hunan Province, and later worked as a publisher and distributor in Guilin, Shanghai, Hong Kong Life Bookstore, Guilin National Salvation Daily, and Yuxia Bookstore in Hong Kong. In 1940, while working in the Hengyang branch of the Life Bookstore, he was arrested by the national Sense reactionaries, and was later rescued by the general management office of the Life bookstore.

At the end of 1941, after the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, Wang Fanzi joined the Dongjiang anti-Japanese guerrilla Army, working in the commissariat Department, the Fifth Group Staff Department and the Forward News. In 1946, he joined the China Association for the Promotion of Democracy. In June 1949, he was transferred to the Publishing Committee of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and served as the chief of the Printing Section and the chief of the Propaganda Section.
In the early years of the founding of New China, Wang Fanzi successively served as the director of the Publishing Department of the General Management Office of Xinhua Bookstore, the director of the Manager's office of the People's Publishing House, the chief of the planning section, the chief of the Publishing Section and the chief of the Publishing Department of the Central People's Government. During this period, he did a lot of pioneering work in the management of publishing and the establishment of rules and regulations of the publishing industry. In the 1950s, the Ministry of Culture issued a nationwide remuneration system, book pricing standards, etc., which were formulated under his auspices.
In 1960, Wang Fangzi became deputy director of the Publishing Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Culture, and in 1963, he also served as manager of the China Printing Company.
China Printing Corporation, established in 1963, is not only an organization directly managing the printing enterprises and institutions under the Ministry of Culture, but also an organization that plays a guiding role in the printing business of the national book printing industry. As soon as China Printing Company was established, it organized an investigation team to investigate the national production capacity and existing problems of book printing, formulated a long-term plan for the comprehensive development of book printing during the third five-year plan, and held a national printing conference. At this meeting, Wang Fanzi, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture publishing Bureau, made a report entitled "Fully mobilize the masses, strengthen management, increase production, improve quality, and better serve the cultural publishing industry", putting forward the goal of catching up with the international advanced level, focusing on enriching the printing force in the region, coordinating the national book printing task, and establishing a new printing base. Also proposed to hire Japanese printing experts, the establishment of printing society and other ideas. In the short three years since the establishment of China Printing Company, Wang Fanzi has carried out fruitful work with all employees in order to improve and strengthen the management of book and periodical printing, in the unified scheduling of book and periodical printing tasks, the introduction of new technology and equipment, the expansion of printing productivity, and the planned distribution of printing machinery and equipment.
In 1975, Wang Fanzi became the president of Cultural Relics Publishing House. In 1979, he took the lead in publishing with foreign cooperation and published several sets of important cultural relics atlas, which had a great impact.
In 1980, the China Printing Technology Association was established, Wang Fanzi served as the first vice chairman, presided over the daily work of the association, edited the "China Printing" magazine, and planned to establish the "China Printing Yearbook". During his work in the association, he also made important contributions in the exchange and cooperation of printing technology with foreign countries. In 1982, he was appointed member and Secretary General of the National Publishing Committee.
From 1983 to 1986, Wang Fangzi was elected as the vice chairman of the first and second sessions of the Chinese Publishers Association, and made great achievements in providing suggestions for the reform of the publishing industry, promoting the theoretical research of the first edition, and carrying out cultural cooperation and exchange activities with foreign countries. In 1987, he was elected a member of the seventh Central Committee of the China Association for the Promotion of Democracy.
