If the knitting needles are rusted before they are put into use, it will bring huge losses to textile enterprises. Because it needs to be in direct contact with textiles, the anti-rust solution of coating anti-rust oil on the knitting needles cannot be adopted, and the commonly used paper and film packaging cannot meet the anti-rust requirements.

The working conditions of knitting needles are harsh, not only there is sliding friction between them and textiles, but also a large tensile force, which makes the knitting needles have the characteristics of wear resistance, heat resistance, high strength, etc., so its material contains more carbon, manganese and silicon. Carbon can improve wear resistance, manganese can improve mechanical strength, and silicon can increase surface hardness by improving hardenability. From the perspective of application, these three elements are beneficial and necessary.

 

However, these three elements cause the knitting needles to be extremely prone to rust. First of all, if there is too much carbon, it will form iron carbide, which will form a galvanic reaction with iron, that is, corrosion. The reason why cast iron is easy to rust is the same. The carbon content of knitting needles is lower than that of cast iron, which belongs to high carbon steel. Manganese and silicon exist in the form of oxides in iron, and when they encounter carbon dioxide and water in the air, they will form manganese acid or silicic acid, and their strong corrosion will cause the surrounding iron to rust. This is also the reason why common manganese steel (such as spring) and silicon steel (such as motor stator) are prone to rust.



Knitting needles are small in size and often dozens or even hundreds of them are packaged together. This packaging method results in a large surface area, so the risk of rust increases simultaneously. The early anti-rust method for knitting needles was to wrap them in paper, but the area where the needles are attached to the paper is prone to rust because the water and organic acids contained in the paper can cause rust. Later, film packaging was used, and desiccant was sometimes added. Although the anti-rust effect was improved, rust would still occur after a long time. Because the air in the film packaging contains water and oxygen, the inside of the packaging is a slow corrosion process, and rust visible to the naked eye will form after a long time. Except that the desiccant has an anti-rust effect by actively removing rust-causing substances, paper and film can only be regarded as packaging materials and do not have anti-rust functions, so the use of these two types of materials for packaging will inevitably cause rust problems.
