The company Solinatra, which produces a 100% plant-based, biodegradable and compostable material, which it markets under the product name of the same name, has announced that its coffee capsules have received the "OK compost Industrial" from TÜV Austria CERT GmbH Certified compostable. Solinatra, a subsidiary of the Rosiro Group of companies, produces capsules with high oxygen and water vapor barrier properties to protect product freshness.
The company is working to develop compostable capsules to tackle the plastic waste problem that traditional coffee capsules are a part of. In 2022, more than 70 billion single-cup coffee capsules will be sold worldwide, enough to circle the earth 51 times. Plastic and aluminum capsules require the lid and coffee grounds to be removed for washing and recycling. Coffee capsules made from Solinatra can be collected with food waste, making it easy for consumers to properly dispose of their capsules, which are converted into high-quality fertilizer in appropriate facilities.
Nespresso compatible capsules made by Solinatra do not contain any fossil derived ingredients. The company's patented process converts harvested crop plant waste and agricultural by-products into biopolymers that can be run on standard injection molding machines. Four grades of Solinatra are currently available, all suitable for injection molding. Earlier this year, the company announced it was developing a thermoforming grade in a project co-funded by UK innovation agency Innovate UK.
